We had another interesting engineering conundrum that we needed to solve.

The headwall of this culvert is constructed from big stone blocks, which were fractured and crumbling, and in need of stabilisation. The top of the arch is about head high for reference.

A few ideas had been floated from the Client including shuttering concrete up against it to reinforce, which we didn’t see as being practicable – particularly as the access to the headwall is restricted with it being at the bottom of steep sided valley. However, the headwall of the culvert could be accessed in a man basket from above.

The council appointed Edwards Diving Services Ltd to carry out the stabilisation work following on from the previous works at the Nant Morlais sink hole emergency works, with sprayed concrete lining works by GSSL – Gunite and Shotcrete Services Ltd.
